It Changes Way Too Fast!!

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

If you don’t live in Alberta you probably think that this is an exaggeration when Albertans say “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.” or something to that effect. Some people will say ten minutes, or some different variation of the phrase. It really is true though. I mean it doesn’t happen like that all the time.

In the last couple weeks here in Southern Alberta is has been, more or less, true to say that the weather changes in a matter of minutes. We’ve been getting some really wacked out weather lately Tornadoes and freakish thunderstorms.

On Tuesday I worked 5:00-9:30. When I drove to Lethbridge it was hot and sunny. My car said it was around 30 degrees (that’s in Celsius). It went up and down a bit as I drove on the highway pasts the fields or crops and past the small towns but it stayed within plus or minus two degrees.

Then an hour or so later I was up at the front of the store working cash and I looked out the window and it had gotten really dark. Just so you know, this wasn’t even the first storm in the past couple weeks, we had a few before this. It was really windy and it started to rain a little. Then we started to hear it falling on the roof and the power flickered a little bit. We all looked outside (the other staff who were at the front and the customers) and there was huge hail falling. Remember, it had been 30 degree above 0 before this. The hail had to be about quarter to loonie (Canadian one dollar coin) sized. There were some areas that got golf ball sized hail that same day.

The hail was melting pretty fast as it was still sort of warm out. Some of us went outside and we were watching the hail. There were some guys doing some construction in the parking lot and they had all gotten inside their trucks and tractors. It was really weird. Then 5-10 minutes later it stopped. It was still dark and windy but the storm started moving away. It didn’t last very long.

When I left work that night at 9:30 you could see the sky again, all pink and purple in the sunset. There were still some clouds in the sky but they were harmless.

As I was driving back to Taber and the sun was setting, there wasn’t much happening in the sky in the way of storms. As I got closer to Taber, about where the speed limit changes from 110Km/h to 80km/h I noticed some flashing lights closer to town. I though to myself, Hmm…I wonder what those are about. Car accident maybe. And then I just forgot about it and went back to listening to whatever music I was listening to. I think it may have been Skillet at the time. But I’m not sure. It was one of my mix CDs that I made for the car. When I got closer to town, now where the speed limit drops from 80km/h to 50km/h, I noticed that the town was dark. I couldn’t tell what the flashing lights were yet though.

Then my phone rang. It was my dad. He told me the power had been out for about 4 hours (I think that’s what he said. My cell phone loses quality when I’m in Taber) and trees had been knocked down in the storm. As I drove through Taber, still on the highway, people were conducting traffic in the inter sections with lights and none of the buildings looked like they had any life in them. Keep in mind it’s 10:00 now and the sun has just set, but there is still a bit of light in the sky. I get home and it’s dark and kind of freaky looking.

The power came back on around 10:30.

Later we found out that the winds had been measured at up to and maybe over 120km/h around the area.

We have a farm behind us and he had a large tree get blown over and his younger trees had been bent and some had been blown right over as well.

There had been farms around our area who had lots of damage done to their crops and equipment. One farm had its grain bins lifted from their concrete bases and thrown 500 feet or more and smushed.

Apparently Wal-Mart went into lock down for about an hour. Customers were told a tornado had touched down and they had to stay in the store.

A hanger at the Taber airport had been flipped over.

Trees and gravestones were overturned at the cemetery in Taber.

It was later reported on the news that a tornado touched down north of Vulcan. There was also damage in small towns all across Southeastern Alberta.

Hows that for crazy? It was all gone and over with not long after. The storm that passed over was not very large but it did a lot of damage. That wasn’t the last one either. There have been more small storms since then.

Even last night. My dad and I were out watching the clouds move last night. They looked pretty freaky. I took some pictures and video but I haven’t put them on my computer yet. It rains a little bit and there was a lot of wind but that was about it. There was definitely rotation in the clouds but no major funnels or anything. My dad was convince we would get a tornado.

The weirdest thing about the storm last night was that the south edge of it didn’t go very far. It came in from the north but it was like it got stuck. There were about 4 layers of clouds that were all moving in different directions at different speeds but the bottom edge of it was right over our backyard (which is the south side of our house). The more southwestern part of the storm seems to stay in the same spot for an hour. The southeastern part of the storm had gone farther south and then came back north and then the whole thing moved east. It was really strange. This was over a period of about 2 hours but I couldn’t figure it out. It was so weird.

Anyways, that’s my story for the day. Last I looked today it’s bright and sunny. My dad went golfing.

I just wanted to put this post out there to say good luck to my friend Chris over at Chris Appeal. He will be appearing in the new music video for one of my favourite singer/songwriters, Skye Sweetnam. The music video is for her new single (Let’s Get Movin’) Into Action from her album Sound Soldier.

Cookies and Snot

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Yup, that’s right, this post contains content involving cookies and snot. Not together of course. Or maybe they are. I guess it depends on how you look at it.

This is the stupidest thing ever, in my opinion at least, and it’s really quiet annoying. It’s 21 degrees Celsius outside and I have a fricken cold! How lame is that?!? My new theory is that it’s because it was always so friggen hot in my room in residence and now I’m back home in my freezing cold bedroom in my parents basement and the temperature drop made me catch a cold. Ok, that really makes no sense but it’s the best I can come up with. After the first night, I woke up with a sore throat. That’s how it always starts. The next day: sore throat. The next day: head feeling like it’s going to explode. That night: constant coughing. Next morning: stuffy/runny nose (is that not the most annoying thing when your nose is running but you can’t suck the snot back in because  your nose is too stuffed?!), less coughing but cough is still in existence. I picked up some Tylenol cold today before I went into Lethbridge and it’s helps the symptoms a bit but doesn’t get rid of them completely.

So I went into Lethbridge today to pick up my last couple assignments from my English teacher. I swear she is the most hilarious person ever! For an old…er… person… at least. She’s awesome. Oddly enough she used to live in Ontario too, and at one point she lived in London (which is where I lived the longest). Anyways, she really wasn’t the point of my story.

I went to Tim Horton’s after I left the college because I hadn’t eaten lunch. I pulled over somewhere to each my sandwich. I didn’t eat my cookies though. Oddly enough they’re still sitting in front of me now on my desk. But they are the best fricken cookies in the world! Or at least at Tim Horton’s. They’re the new Peanut Butter cookies. OMG! They are so much better than the old ones, which barely tasted like peanut butter. These ones have peanuts in them and peanut butter chips (like those Reese’s Peanut Buter chipits you can get for backing…or just eating if you’re like me lol) and I swear they actually have peanut butter in them! The old ones probably had like a little tiny drop of peanut butter in each cookie lol.

Yeah, anyways, I guess that’s all I wanted to say today. I like cookies! :D But not snot! Lol.

I’m going to go actually eat my cookies now…probably upstairs where its warm.

The Most Random of all Randoms!

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

I say things are random all the time but, seriously, I think this is the most random thing that has ever come into my head. I have absolutely no idea where the heck it came from, but I want to take Piano lessons! This is all in the last like two minutes that this came into my head. No joke!

I guess when it comes to music and stuff, I’m kind of an odd ball. I got into band and everything in elementary school and high school and I loved and stuff. I think the musical part of me came from my dad’s side of the family because I don’t think my mom’s side of the family is really musical. Maybe a bit, but not like my dad’s family.

Most kids get their start on the piano. I mean I guess my Nana did try to teach me when I was really young, I kind of remember it, but it didn’t stick. I wasn’t really that interested. Then when grade 5 rolled around, we started playing the recorder, those annoying little thing, which, I still have, with my hugely gapped teeth marks in it lol. I can still play it too. Then in grade 7 we got to play real instruments, and I played the flute. I think I started because there were too people who I looked up to at the time (one of which I still kind of do look up to) played the flute.

I played the flute right through to grade 12. I actually started teaching myself the oboe in grade 12. I wasn’t too bad. I won’t say I was the greatest, but I was the only one in the school playing it lol. It was way different from playing an instrument that you blow air over haha.

But yeah, now, just all of a sudden, I actually want to learn to play the piano. I really don’t know where it came form. Anyone interested in teaching me?! I do have a piano at home, that pretty much only gets touched when my grandparents are at our house, because my grandpa is an amazing piano player! He composes too. My dad used to play but he hasn’t in a while.

Anyways, I have to get going. I’m meeting my group from my English class before our Computer Hardware Maintenance class to work on stuff. So I will talk to you later.

Cops Cars and Big Trucks

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Tonight I drove out to Taber, partly because I was kind of freaked out by my roommate’s boyfriend (I’m assuming that’s what he is) is here. Most of you probably know that my roommate is always locked in her room and I never see her. She did come out with Cara and I once, but only once. Even after that I still barely ever see her. Last week on Wednesday, I think it was, she left in the afternoon or something and then she came back the next afternoon with him in her car as I was leaving. Then he was here all weekend. He was still here Monday afternoon because they past me when I was walking back from class. The I didn’t hear anything until this morning after my accounting class I could hear them talking. So I think he may have been here all week, but I’m not sure. He doesn’t see to have a car so it doesn’t make sense for him to leave and then come back.

Katelyn left this afternoon and I could hear him in her room after she left. It kind of creeped me out because I don’t know him at all. He’s weird looking too. I’ve seen him three times. About a month ago when she brought him down here and I had my door open when they came in, then last week in Katelyn’s car, and then when I saw them walking into the school on Monday.

So, I wanted to shower but I was kind of scared to leave my door unlocked knowing he was here by himself. I don’t know why. The whole situation is kind of weird and creepy. So I went home to do some laundry and shower and to steal some of my parents food, but they didn’t really have any lol.

Anyways, the point of this post was supposed to be about my drive back to Lethbridge. It was kind of amusing.

I was driving at about 155 km/h and people were flying past me, but I’m glad I wasn’t going any faster than I was because a few minutes later another vehicle was coming up behind me. I knew it was coming, but then when it actually past me, I saw that it was a cop. I started laughing because I was speeding but the cop was passing me. He had to be going about 120. He didn’t have his flashy lights on or anything, he was just driving. I didn’t figure out if it was a Taber cop or RCMP, I didn’t look close enough but I found it quite funny.

Then something that kind of freaked me out. On the last big turn before you get to Coaldale, I was coming up behind a big truck and I was on cruise control, so when my van actually passed the truck it was right on that turn and it was really freaky because it’s a fairly sharp turn when you’re going 110+ on it.

Then when I got to the lights in Coaldale I saw the cop again. There was one car between us. Then when the light changed green there was all these vehicles following this cop, because no one is stupid enough to pass a cop lol. It found it so amusing because there was like 4 vehicles behind this cop, in front of me all the way to Lethbridge. I was laughing almost all the way to Lethbridge.

Anyways, that was my odd night.

Fire Rabbit vs Earth Dragon

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

Today is the start of the year of the Yang Earth Rat! Lol. Yeah, the animal is a “Rat” and the Element is “Yang Earth”. But calling it “Yang Earth Rat” is more fun.

Don’t even ask me why I started thinking about this. Ok, actually, it was because Regis and Kelly said something about it being the year of the rat. That reminded me that for the longest time I’ve wanted to check what my animal is. I’ve always thought that it was a dragon because that’s what 1988 is, but I knew that the dates are offset from our’s. So I finally checked it.

It turns out that I actually have to go by 1987 because the year of the dragon didn’t start until February 17th 1988 and I was born on January 30th 1988. But here’s the best part: I’m a Yin Fire Rabbit. LMAO!! So, obviously, my element is “Yin Fire”. I can call myself a “Fire Rabbit”! I kind of like that because it sounds funny, better than a “Yang Earth Dragon” which I would be if I had been born on my due date!! Haha. I was supposed to be born on February 29th. Yes, the 29th. That would have sucked! But instead, I was born a month early. I’m ok with that lol.

Now, if it was a “Fire Dragon,” then that would have been just lame.

I would have liked being a dragon though. Dragons are cooler than Rabbits. Although, I have wanted to get a pet rabbit for quite a while now lol. A cute fluffy one with floppy ears. :) lol.

I think I now have an idea for another tattoo. Although, I can’t afford it, and I don’t know where I would get it either. I did see a butterfly that I really liked at the place in GP where Amber and I went. I should have taken a picture of it so I had it lol. I don’t remember exactly what it looked like but I really liked it and I would have gotten it on my wrist because it was small. I had been thinking of getting a dragon, but I didn’t because I didn’t know for sure that I was a dragon. So now I’m thinking I should get fire. I like fire! lol. I wouldn’t get a tattoo of a rabbit. If I was really weird I would get a flaming rabbit but I don’t think I could live with that lol. But I could always get Chinese symbols for fire and rabbit. I wish I had thought of that before I got my other Chinese symbols because I might have gotten that instead. But that’s ok. I won’t be getting anymore any time soon. I can’t afford it. Although I probably do still have some birthday/Christmas money left, so I could do it, but I don’t want it bad enough right now.

My dad is a Yang Earth Dog and my mom is a Yin Metal Ox. LOL!!

Anyways, that’s the end of my randomness for today. Here’s where I got this information from:

Industry Dominated by Men

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Last semester, when I was taking Multimedia, the program leader, Leanne (the only female multimedia instructor),would talk about how Multimedia and other technology fields are dominated by men. They usually had at least 65% guys in the program.

It seems to be the same with CIT. It seems to be that way with any technology industry. It became really obvious to me when I realize the high percentage of guys in some of my classes this term. I’m getting a different look at it this term because I have different people in all of my classes. In Multimedia, because it’s such a small program, we were all in the same classes together.

I really noticed it on Wednesday in my Marketing class. Even though it’s a business class, the majority of us are in the CIT program and more than that are guys. We were broken into 7 groups of four to do a case study. At least one group for sure was all guys. The rest only had one girl. So at the most there are only 6 girls in that class.  There might only be 5 because I didn’t really get a good chance to look at every group but I know I saw, for sure, one group of all guys.

In my Computer Hardware Maintenance class there are only three girls, including myself, out of a total of 13, I believe.

My accounting class sort of goes along with this, but it isn’t the best example. I’m pretty sure that I’m the only one in CIT in that class, and there are I think 4 or five girls out of about 25 or so. I remember the first day, it was kind of odd. We took up three rows. The two back rows were all guys and the front row was all girls, and we didn’t even fill up the whole row. The class has gotten smaller since then, but when we were all introducing ourselves (which was getting really annoying because I had to do that in every class, in multimedia we only had to do it once), every single guy was in agriculture and from a farm in either Saskatchewan, Alberta, or BC. It was so weird. I think some of the girls were from farms too. Whether they were in agriculture or not, I don’t remember.

My Intro to Management class is much larger than the others. We’re in a theatre instead of a classroom. I don’t know the numbers, but there has to be over 40. I’d say about 70% guys.

Even my Business Writing class has a higher number of guys. There were only three girls in class today. But there weren’t many there anyway. I’m guessing there’s about 25 people in the class, but there was probably 15 there today.

Well, that concludes yet another random blog post. I’m going to go curl up in bed. I’m really cold but my room is still warm. It got up to 26 degrees today, even though my thermostat is set for 15. I can’t figure out why it’s doing this. I kept my door open for a few hours to help even out the temperature, and I even opened my window. It’s quite cold outside right now. It’s got to be about -10 because my van didn’t want to start but I did get it to start. I think it’s the coldest it’s been all winter because it’s the hardest it’s been for me to start the van.

Anyways, I guess that is all.

Wacko!

Friday, January 4th, 2008

I don’t normally watch videos on YouTube. I mean I know people who send hours upon hours just surfing YouTube, and I’ve never done that or felt the urge to. But every once in a while I come across something that I find interesting or stupid or whatever. I don’t think I would have come across this except that I was reading a friend’s blog and he had posted a video by this guy who clearly has some sort of obsession with Britney Spears. I had actually seen one of the videos by this guy before, the “Leave Britney Alone” video (click here to watch). When I had first seen it I actually thought that it was a chick. I found out later that it was a guy. Anyways, my friend was talking about this video and I found it rather amusing (click here to read the post). And I just started watching some of the other wacked out videos that this Chris Crocker guy has posted. There is seriously something wrong with him! I mean first of all, he looks like a woman. But I really think he needs some help. Major help!!! Here’s one that I thought was really quite wacked, entitled The Secret.

And the way he sounds at the beginning when he says “Hello” is just really creepy!!

Oh, and check out his YouTube page! OMG!!

Also, in half of his videos, he’s wearing thick eyeliner, eyeshadow, and bright pink lipstick. I think he’s a little more than gay!!

(I’ll probably keep adding random comments on here. I’m still watching some of his videos lol)

Winter Wonderland

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

I finally got my thermostat fixed in my room in res. Ryan, the maintenance guy, put a brand new thermostat on. It looks so much nicer than the old one lol, and so far it seems to be working.

I spent the whole time he was in here fixing it in the kitchen washing dishes and whatnot. He left a few times to go get stuff and one of the times he came back in and he said that this was one of the cleanest apartments on campus. I thought it was kind of funny. I guess it is sort of clean. But the place is old so it’s hard to make it look “nice”. But I guess it’s a good thing! And I don’t like cleaning!! I guess Katelyn and I just don’t make much of a mess. Course neither of us really spend a lot of time in the “common area” (a.k.a. the kitchen/living room/from hall/whatever else that room is lol. we’ll add dining room to that cuz there’s a table and chairs lol).

I kind of had a conversation with Katelyn last night. She came in and oculdn’t get the front door shut so I went out to help her and I said I’d mention it to the maintenance guy (I forgot to though) when he came to fix my thermostat. Apparently her room has been hot too. That’s what our conversation was about lol. It was short. She had her phone open so I’m assuming she was talking to someone. I should have mentioned the door and Katelyn’s room to Ryan, but I was kind of hoping she would come out of her room when he was here, but she didn’t. He came at like 9:30. She just left a few minutes ago.

For those of you who don’t really know my roommate situation, here’s the short version of it: I moved in about two weeks after classes started (I was in one of the townhouses before, where I had 3 roommates, now I just have one). Katelyn, my current roommate, pretty much just locks herself in her room and I never see her. Cara and I invited her out once but she apparently had just gotten out of the shower so she didn’t come. Course, I’m not really the kind of person to go knocking on someone’s door just to say hi, unless I know them pretty well. I’ve never really gotten to know her at all. She seems nice and all but she is rather anti-social.

Anywho, I should get going. Talk to you all later!

Keira

P.S. When I started writing this post I did have an intended point, but somewhere along the way I kind of forgot what it was. Lol. Sorry.
